It's been about two years since Porsche revealed its slinky Mission E concept, which promised Tesla-matching range and performance with Porsche's driving dynamic expertise. Now we finally get a look at one on the road. It looks like the Mission E is far along in development, and it seems that Porsche is very serious about taking on Tesla, since the car was being driven alongside both a Model S and a Model X.

Focusing on the Porsche itself, though, the design does appear to have been toned down significantly. The ultra-low hood and extra-tall fenders of the concept have been raised and lowered respectively for a much less dramatic nose. The bulging fenders have also been constrained a bit.

But the overall look still draws from the concept. The car is still very low in profile, with a low belt line. The rear fenders still look wide in trademark Porsche fashion, and they're highlighted by the wide corporate taillight band on the back. Other details from the concept include the side vents on the fenders, the big diffuser at the tail, and the vents in the front bumper that descend from the headlights. Those headlights also look to be similar slim units to the concept's. One other fun detail are the faux exhaust tips on the back to throw off spy photographers and passers-by.

Porsche has previously said that the Mission E would reach production by 2020, and according to our friends at Engadget, it should go on sale in 2019. Based on how complete the cars in these photos appear to be, we think the company has a good chance of hitting that target. When the concept was shown, Porsche promised 590 horsepower and, on the European test cycle, a range of over 310 miles. Also interesting was the concept's claimed 800-volt electrical system that could be charged to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes. Time will tell whether that system comes to fruition, but Porsche has at least tested some portion of the system on its Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race cars. Porsche also expects to sell the car for $80,000 to $90,000. All these features taken together would definitely make for a compelling Tesla alternative.
lol I guess they are just making sure they can beat a Tesla before marketing or bragging that they can lol lol

Porsche Built An Electric Cayman To Show Off Its Upcoming Mission E Technology

Porsche has developed an electric Cayman. The bad news is that they don’t plan on selling it. The good news is that it previews the impressive technology that will be introduced with the upcoming electric Porsche Mission E sports sedan.
According to Porsche, the Cayman e-volution has an electric range of approximately 125 miles with performance capable of setting a 3.3 second zero to 60 mph time. Porsche clarified that it plans for the actual production Mission E to stretch its electric range to around 300 miles (500 kilometers).
When Porsche decided it was going to go ahead with its Mission E concept for 2019, it also made the bold claim that it would develop a charging system that could juice up the car with an 80-percent charge in just 15 minutes. The new Cayman e-volution has allegedly stayed true to that claim.

Porsche debuted its “Porsche Turbo Charging” system, which it claims is capable of juicing up to 320 kW per vehicle. It’s a 800-volt system, compared to a Tesla Supercharger’s current 480-volt system that can provide up to 120 kW of power per vehicle. Porsche sticks by its original claim that the Mission E will be able to charge to 80 percent capacity in just 15 minutes.
This (confusingly named) Turbo Charging system will be the part of a “high power, fast-charging network” across higher-trafficked areas of Europe in a partnership between Volkswagen Auto Group, Mercedes, BMW and Ford, as well as additional similar networks.
This is all shaping up to satisfy the intriguing and attractive premise of the Mission E when it finally starts stealing Tesla customers at the end of the decade, but can we please linger on this concept of an electric Cayman a little bit longer?

Anticipation is starting to build for Porsche’s upcoming Mission E — its first all-electric model — ahead of the scheduled 2019 release, and fueling the excitement are more frequent sightings of the vehicle on the road. While the electric car is still in development, we’ve mostly been treated to still images up until now, however video has finally surfaced showing Porsche test the Mission E on Germany’s famous Nürburgring track.
The brief clip, which was uploaded by France’s L’Automobile Magazine, reveals a test version of the car flying through Nürburgring’s corners without hesitation. While it makes almost no noise, it’s clear the Mission E is driving at high speeds, and it’s exciting to see in motion for the first time.

The location of the Nürburgring is important, as the track is often used by car companies to try to set new time records with production vehicles, as well as testing grounds for performance models. It also shows that Porsche is making sure the Mission E upholds its reputation for race track speed and handling.
Aside from recent public sightings, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume recently gave some concrete details on the EV’s development, like noting that its production design has been finalized, and confirming that it will go on sale before the end of 2019 and will be competitively priced against Tesla’s Model S.
