Mercedes will offer wireless charging in 2017

Tue Jun 14, 2016 8:45 pm

Starting as soon as next year Mercedes will be offering wireless charging on its electric vehicles!
The first vehicle to get it will be the facelifted Mercedes-Benz S500e.

The 3.6 kW wireless charging system is designed for home use and has a 90% efficiency rating.

I hope they'll adopt the newly announced SAE J2954 wireless standard.

I would hope the do! Anything else is just plain dumb. There's no space in the EV market for proprietary wireless charging.... if wireless is the way of the EV charging future then it all needs to be compatible with each other.

Really? Is this the answer? 10% loss just because people are too lazy to plug in?

Yes, I think so. For the majority of new EV buyers, I think they will opt for wireless charging.

I'd also wonder about the efficiency of the onboard AC charger.

Right now any way you charge your battery pack you're using the onboard charger, so the wireless system always causes more loss.

Not always - my Plugless wireless charger is 214Volts DC, so it goes through the car charger, but since it is already DC, there is no conversion from A/C so no additional loss, it simply goes straight into my battery pack :)
